Prashant Kumta, a professor at Pitt's Swanson School of Engineering, told Pittsburgh's Action News 4 why lithium-ion batteries can cause fires and why those fires can be so hard to put out.

Model S Tesla has about 8,000 lithium-ion batteries, which means it also has about 8,000 litres of organic material that can catch fire if it is damaged or gets too hot.

Kumta is currently carrying out research at the Energy Innovation Center in order to build batteries with a much better energy density and a far lower risk of explosion.
